Title: The NA book circle (Literacy tested, Idiocy not approved)
Post by: demon-fayt on December 10, 2009, 08:44:48 pm
XD I'm so mean. Basically, I though I'd dust off the ole' Coffee shop section in the NA house, Warm the place up a bit with a nice fire below the mantle piece, and a big old comfy chair with  some Earl Grey, and a big ole pipe (just like grandpa :p). I suppose the main purpose of this is like a 'What are you reading currently' thread.

I'm currently reading 'The Road' by Cormac McCarthy (the book that the film is based on), and boy....If it weren't for my aptitude for random mood swings, I'd need some serious psychiatric help, because this book is DEPRESSING! Also, apparently Mr. McCarthy has some sort of one-man vendetta against Comma's and quotation (the latter of which is NEVER used once in this book >_<). It makes reading it a bit confusing at certain points, but after a while, you get used to it

and because I heard as such, To ail the aforementioned depression, I also picked up a copy of 'Up in the Air' (yes, yet another book that has been adapted into a film.) From what I have read of certain reviews, it's just the type of pick-me-up I will be needing after my completion of The Road.

the last thing I read before this was Neil Gaiman's 'The Graveyard Book' which was by all accounts enjoyable, but in my opinion was a bit short, and ended quite oddly. Its a cliffhanger, but you aren't really left with that sense of 'Oh man, I really hope he writes more about this' because in the end, it's just as how it should have been. Its like running into the great wall of china if you were to be pacing down a narrow corridor.

Eh thats my 2 cents. What have you all been reading?

I recently finished Pride & Prejudice by Jane Austen... for the forty-thousandth time. It's one of my all-time favorite novels.

And once I do some more unpacking, I intend to reread The Furies of Calderon by Jim Butcher, again. I need to refresh myself with the Codex Alera series before I go buy the next book in the series...

Speaking of such things. I need to go and check out Pride and Prejudice and Zombies. Its supposedly as epic as it sounds. All the drama of Jane Austen with the terror of George A. Romero

Yeah, I've been hearing about it for a long time. I need to watch the movie, too...

I finally finished First Lord's Fury, by Jim Butcher. Overall, it was a really awesome book... but I'm sad, because it was also the last book in the Codex Alera series. I was hoping that the story would go a lot further, and in the end it left me wanting more. On the bright side, there's plenty of room for a sequel, if Mr. Butcher ever has time to explore one.

I'm currently reading the fourth book in the Temeraire series, Empire of Ivory, by Naomi Novik. It's an awesome historical fantasy, but sometimes it makes for slow reading so it's taking me much longer to finish than most books... although I am super-excited to hear that Peter Jackson (LotR) has optioned the rights to the series, and is considering making it into a miniseries. Please, God, let him do it right. x__x;

Am, at some point, getting around to reading 'The Alchemist'. Supposed to be really good, and it's s short read, so Im sure it wont take TOO long.

Read: Blindness by Jose Saramago. Wow, was that an interesting book, they did decently with the movie, but unless you read the book then you wouldn't get the movie. It takes getting used to the lack of punctuation, but its worth reading.

Gwenyfhar by Mercedes Lackey. It's an amazing take on the three Guiniverres.

Reading: The Scarlet Letter by Nathaniel Hawthorne, been reading it since AUGUST. This AP Language and Composition class is obnoxious! We're supposed to read three other books before the year is out. Why would you ever want to get a doctorate in The Scarlet Letter? Shakespeare's works, now that's understandable.

Still working through The Ground Beneath Her Feet by Salman Rushdie. Interesting. Haven't read enough to conjecture anymore conclusions.

Can't wait to get a copy of Seeing by Jose Saramago. Its supposed to be as insightful as Blindness was, no pun intended.

I'm currently working on The Alchemyst by Micheal Scott. Amazing book, lots of action and it explains everything. If you've ever had an interest in Nicholas Flamel, I suggest picking it up. I've got The Alchemyst currently, The Magician, and The Sorceress are sitting on my shelves waiting to be read and The Necromancer will be out in May. Can't wait. But, after that we have to wait a year for each.

I'm also psyched about Maximum Ride. I've been reading the series over and over again, waiting for news of when the movie will be released. It's due this year, but they havn't even released cast yet. It's quite depressing. But, we'll just have to wait.

I finished all of the above and am midway through Volume VI. I'm going to take look at the two you read, Veraledy. The latter sounds very interesting... Yeah, Hawthorne is a royal pain. I am sorry for your loss.

have FINISHED 'The Alchemist' and it was relatively enjoyable, until around the end where it careens off into a very blatant message about God manifesting the dreams of believers. It almost literally pregresses such as 'plot plit plot plot desert plot plot inspirational quotes plot God God God plot plot God God God wind God God God God God God God God plot-device as leeway to God.' Griping aside, its pretty good. Definitely recommend it as a read for anyone wishing for something short and intelectual. And I have FINALLY gotton started on 'Up in the Air' which was way ahead of its time in lampooning the corporate America that executives believe they enjoy. Greatly enjoyable.

I finished Naomi Novik's Empire of Ivory yesterday. It was not at all what I'd expected, from the beginning to the end, but it was very, very good... Although she twisted the ending into a horrible cliff-hanger. I got to the last page and went, "[insert many 4-letter words]!!!"

Fortunately, I already owned a copy of Victory of Eagles, Novik's 5th novel in the Temeraire series... so I didn't have to go out and buy one first thing this morning. Needless to say, I'm already finished with it (and impatient for the 6th book to be published, damn her). I can only say, Victory of Eagles did not disappoint in the least. (Although reading the entire thing in one day does make my brain feel a little wrung-out.)

More Temeraire please.

Finished up The Alchemyst. I didn't see how it was shoving God down my thoat, but oh well. I saw the trailers for The Lightning Thief, and bought the book. I know, I'm influenced by the media. But it's not so bad so far, the chapter names are really strange.

"I Accidentally Vaporize My Pre-algebra Teacher"
"We Take a Zebra to Vegas"
"Three Old Ladies Knit the Socks of Doom"
"I Become Supreme Lord of the Bathroom"
and my personal favorite:
"A God Buys Us Cheeseburgers"

Can't wait to really get into it.

Just finished The Keys to the Kingdom series by Garth Nix. I highly recommend it if you want kind of a steampunk with sorcery thrown in type of story.
Now though I'm working on The Inferno by Dante Alighieri. It's a super hard read, but the amount of gruesome detail behind some of his descriptions is just amazing.

I'm really enjoying it. The graphic depictions are just fascinating, however the story makes a lot of references to things people in our time wouldn't know. It takes a lot of cross referencing which can be rather annoying.

OHMUHGAH. Other than the realism, and the fact that I literally couldn't stop crying at the conclusion; I never thought a man could write such a love story. Expressing a woman's thoughts so vividly.. UGH. So good.

Oh, I've been meaning to read those (Once I get caught up with Pendragon). Are they any good?

Title: Re: The NA book circle (Literacy tested, Idiocy not approved)
Post by: The_Horned_One on December 07, 2010, 07:42:59 pm
I think they're fantastic.  If you like the Harry Potter series (especially the earlier books), then you should like this one.  They're fairly fast paced and easy to read, so I wouldn't be surprised if you managed to finish off all five books in fives days.  (I had to slow down and take breaks with the 4th and 5th books, because my dreams were starting to get a bit too vivid.)

I appreciate how Hades was portrayed, instead of the typical "Hades is the bad guy for no apparent reason other than because he's THE bad guy" thing that you get a lot in movies and whatnot (Disney's Hercules, anyone?).  That horrid movie based on the book went back to Hades being the bad guy for some reason.  Actually, someone said something that I think did a really good job of describing the movie:

"Imagine if they made the first harry potter movie again, but Dumbledore and Voldemort aren't in it at all, nobody even mentions them, Ron is black so that he can do cool urban crap, the entire school experience is a montage without any Quiddich, there aren't any houses or choosing hat, harry starts out at 15 and is actually the most competent person in the film and doesn't really need anybody, hermoine is made into a love interest...etc. How satisfied would you be with it?"

Oh, wait, there was one reply that made that description a little more accurate:

"That works, except that you forgot the part about fusing Hermione with Draco."

So, if you saw that movie, do NOT let it determine whether you'll read the books or not.

Edit:
Heh, despite Grover's transformation from Awkward-Hippy-Kid Grover to Cool-Kid-LaaaAAaaiiidieess-Man Grover, he still managed to seem like the same person somehow.  Maybe because they maintained his diet of cans.

Post by: Xira on December 07, 2010, 08:20:14 pm
Hahaha. I love that analogy. I actually haven't seen the movie yet, I was only interested in it for the fancy looking special effects.
I did like the earlier Harry Potter books more than the later ones though so hearing you say that says good things to me. Once I catch up on Pendragon I think I'll start that series next. Thanks for solving that question for me. :3

Post by: The_Horned_One on December 07, 2010, 08:57:53 pm
Eh, the ending of Pendragon was kind of lame, if I remember.
I mean, as series went on, Saint Dane only became more terrifying, to the point where I was actually shaking at the end of one of the books.  But at the end it was like...

[sort of spoiler...kind of...]

Saint Dane:  "You mean, nobody likes what I've done?"
Everyone:  "No! Not really!"
Saint Dane:  "Awww..."

[/spoiler]

Mind you, this is just really overly dramatized, and doesn't really reflect the ending at all.  But this is what it felt like.  I dunno, once you finish, you'll have to tell me if you got that impression from him, or if I'm just a nutbag.  Despite my impression that Saint Dane was somehow broken, though, I still enjoyed the book and figuring out how Bobby was going to 'save the day', as one would say.

Yeah I love Saint Dane. He is/was the best. ^.^

I hope that's not how it ends (I didn't even realize it was done already), but I guess I'll just have to read it for myself because Quillian Games was amazing. ♥

Read Agents of Artifice, working on Test of Metal.
If you're a hardcore nerd like I am, and play Magic: The Gathering, the two are Planeswalker novels. Excellent books, mostly about Jace Beleren and Tezzeret. Awesome read, but if you don't know a thing about Magic, you'll be a bit lost. If you want something new, and a challenge, pick them up. I enjoyed them.

Also working on Assassin's Creed: Brotherhood.
Book about what happens directly after the end of the second game. It's very enlightening, and so much delicious assassin goodness. <3

I fail at being observant. I totally missed this comment.

I've realized (of course) that I'm going to have to buy all of Melissa Marr's books... I've since read Ink Exchange, and I'm REALLY looking forward to Fragile Eternity. I just have to plunk out and buy it. I would have done it before now but I got distracted by Cassandra Clare's Mortal Instruments series, and then rereading the Dresden Files books before the next one comes out... So many books, so little time. x____x;

Also, I'm not entirely sure those extensions of Ink Exchange were actually written by Melissa Marr. I remember reading somewhere that it was some type of fan-writing and that they don't belong to Marr... but don't quote me on that--I don't know for sure.

Did you read the last book yet? I haven't thought about it for a long time.

Indeed I have read the last book. That's because we don't talk nearly as much.

True. We don't have a lot in common.

Working my way through The Enchanted Forest Chronicles by Patricia C. Wrede... I started the third book yesterday before I totally zonked out and took an impromptu nap. I think once we get released I'll hit up Half-Price Books and see about picking up the Melissa Marr books I'm missing. I need more reading material if we're going to be spending so much time in the hospital, since I'm not going to school this semester.

My dad had me start reading 'Robopocalypse' by Daniel H. Wilson. Just reading through the prologue was enough to get me excited for things to come!

I finally caved in and bought Jim Butcher's Ghost Story, which is the newest book in the Dresden Files series. It was awesome... but I read it in two days, and now I want more. WRITE FASTER, MR. BUTCHER!!!! D:

I also bought Fragile Eternity, by Melissa Marr (Yes, Vera... I'm finally reading it. XD)... which I have started, but I keep getting distracted from. I should have it finished in a few more days, though, and then I can move on to the fourth and fifth books--which I also have on hand to read next. :D
