Neither. I prefer Open Source operating systems for just about everything.

I am a fan of Linux, but I have yet to find a perfect distribution. So far I have tried Sabayon, GoblinX, Fedora, Ubuntu and Debian. I haven't tried any BSD systems yet, however, so I can't say anything about Dragonfly. What is your preference? You didn't say anything one way or the other.

oh ok I see. How is Debian? I heard about it but never checked it out myself. What is your preference? You didn't say anything one way or the other.

It's a lot like Ubuntu, but it's much older and isn't as widely supported. I haven't gotten very far with it, so I couldn't give you a full run-down. I meant between the two you asked me about, but I guess I'll take that.

OH! I'm sorry I thought you meant the Mac/PC thing. I've never spent time on either actually. I've read about them but didn't experience either first hand. But wait a sec...I thought Linux was Ubuntu

Linux is more like a category than a system itself. There are hundreds of version, or distributions, of Linux. Ubuntu is the most prominent one, and is the most popular distribution for personal use, though there is really nothing special about it. It has the largest base of technical support, so that could be why it bears the face of Linux.

That being said then I believe the one my friend has is the Linux Ubuntu with the 3D Cube navigation desktop that resembled the GameCube navigation screen

Yeah, I'm running Ubuntu 8.04.1 (Hardy). I'm not sure when they first started using that, but it can't have been too long before that. One thing Ubuntu has going for it is it can handle heavy graphics with ease, especially when compared to something like Vista. Most other distributions are built for performance over looks, but Ubuntu concentrates on them somewhat.

Yea thats what I was told. Most of those kinds of OSs are performanced based...but what works on them? I mean can standard PC/Mac software work or do you have to have it converted?

Well really, Linux is more an open source DIY OS. I've not much looked into the others you guys have mentioned (Seeing as I specialize in IT, and not programming X_x) but it sounds like they are alot like linux, in that they give you freedom to create your own programming system and apps and such so that your OS is personalized to your own style. I'd LOVE to be able to use Linux, but at the moment, im a bogged down Vista user u_u.

Ok so then that being the case, you wouldn't have to change any types of software(i.e. games, word processors, security) for it to work on the OS

I don't have much experience with Mac software, but it can run most Windows programs with an emulator. You can usually find an Open Source version of a program, but it's useful for gaming and disks and such.

Yea I was aware that some verisons of programs are Open Source based like Limewire for Linux, but ok using the emulator to run programs makes it all better. I'm gonna have to run some Open Source OSs and see how they work first hand. The more info I receive about them the more interesting they get.
